Midsummer Night Magic at the First Light Festival in Lowestoft June 17th-18th 2023

As any local knows, sunrise in Lowestoft has always been a uniquely tranquil and beautiful sight – it’s not for nothing that the Waveney shore is known as the Sunrise Coast. Now the First Light Festival is set to create a brand new festival experience centred on the daily natural wonder that is Lowestoft sunrise.

Taking full advantage of Lowestoft’s natural beauty, the First Light Festival in Lowestoft is a brand new free festival with more than 100 free events. Held on Midsummer night, the festival will begin at midday on Saturday the 17th of June 2023, and run through to midday on Sunday the 18th 2023, letting festival-goers experience the midsummer sunrise amidst an atmosphere of great live music, fantastic food, plus all sorts of weird and wonderful surprises.

The festival is to be held on Lowestoft’s South Beach and aims at giving attendees a unique shared experience with music, dance, film, talks, walks, sports and workshops as well as the best local and regional food, drinks and produce. The festival site extends out across the promenade and the beachfront gardens to offer arts, activities and entertainment in our beautiful traditional seaside town.

As Britain’s most easterly town, Lowestoft gets the first rays of morning sun, and is the first place in the UK to see the sunrise. As such, it’s the perfect venue for a festival built around the beauty of the midsummer sunrise, but if you don’t know the town, are you going to get lost?

If you haven’t been to Lowestoft before, and you’re worried about finding the festival, it couldn’t be easier. If arriving by train, it’s a five minute walk (just follow the smell of chips and the sight of the waves), while if you’re arriving by car, Lowestoft’s South Beach offers ample parking.

What’s on at the Lowestoft First light Festival?

The Lowestoft First light Festival bill is jam packed with acts covering all forms of entertainment, from music to dance, literature to food and drink, all served up on the hot sands of Lowestoft’s glorious South beach.

Musical highlights include celebrated Mercury award-winning musicians usually opening up the festival with unique mix of percussion and electronic music. These artists then usually returns to the stage at sunrise to greet the dawn, with a re-worked performance of his renowned and evocative piece ‘Light’.

Another hot ticket is the sundown set from last year was acclaimed DJ Gilles peterson, whose trademark mix of eclectic sounds from around the world will make the perfect accompaniment to the sinking sun.
