South Beach is back!

After its £3.5 million renovation, Lowestoft’s South Beach reopened last week, much to the delight of locals and visitors alike.

South Beach

Following heavy losses of sand and other beach material in the storms of December 2013, South Beach was controversially closed for the summer in 2015, but now, 14,000 tonnes of rock and an estimated 50,000 man hours of work later, families can once more enjoy one of the region’s best-loved attractions.

The newly-restructured beach was opened by Waveney MP Peter Aldous and Waveney District Council leader Colin Law at an unveiling ceremony on Thursday 10 March. Among the improvements are a concrete access ramp and a new guardrail along the promenade, as well as a new information board.

The structure of the beach has been radically overhauled, with new rock structures designed to minimise future erosion. Though most of the beach is now fully accessible, a small part remains closed off for safety reasons. This area will be off limits for the foreseeable future, but Waveney Council assure us that a solution is being sought.

Though the decision to close the beach for the 2015 summer season was seen by many as controversial and potentially damaging to the tourist industry, the town is united in its enthusiasm for the improvements, and summer 2016 is predicted to be one of the town’s biggest ever holiday seasons.

We visited south beach for the first time today and we love it!it is clean, smart and very welcoming. We were amazed at how beautiful the beach is-pristine golden sands- not a scrap of litter anywhere. We will be coming back again to this lovely place.
