Event Title:

The 2008 Round Britain Offshore Power Boat Race

Location:

Lowestoft Sea Front, NR33 0AE

Description:

For the third time in sports history it's time to take to the British seas for The 2008 Round Britain Offshore Power Boat Race as this massive event kicks off in Portsmouth on Saturday 21st June.

First staged in 1969 - with the next following 15 years later in 1984, it has taken a further 24 years for the third event to be staged and is truly a massive undertaking - with 46 boats and crews taking part. These crews include an all female team, taxi drivers and a family crew - all of whom will be among the skilled drivers testing their speed and endurance in a series of hotly contested legs around the UK in some of the world's most powerful boats.

The 2008 incarnation of the race is the brainchild of Mike Lloyd, a former powerboat racer himself and a member of The Cowes Organising Committee Ltd. 'Powerboating is one of the most thrilling sports in then world and one of the few marine adventure sports available to UK sportsmen and women,' says Mike 'That there hasn't been an event like this since 1984 is a thrill in itself, although not quite comparable to being onboard a powerboat crashing across the open ocean.'

A labour of love for himself and his fellow organisers, this event has been arranged for the joy of powerboat racing and the sheer thrill of the high speed race. It is also hoped that the event will raise upwards of £50,000 for the RNLI.

Sponsored by Tesco 99 Octane, which will be powering these incredible vehicles around the country, the race begins in Portsmouth on 21st June before taking in Plymouth, Milford Haven, Bangor, Argyle, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Lowerstoft around the UK. The event will last for ten days as the crews race to be the first to the finish line back in Portsmouth to claim one of several class titles.

As one of the last remaining marine challenges for adventurers in the UK, The Round Britain Offshore Powerboat Race is set to kick up some serious spray in June and July 2008 and mark the beginning of a new era for powerboat racing in the UK.

All race Teams will be mustering in the “Pits” at Gunwharf Quays on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th June for scruitineering and preparation for the race.

On Saturday 21st the Teams will be leaving Gunwharf Quays at around 08.30 to 09.00hrs to Muster off of Southsea Pier.

All Teams in Race Start 1 will begin their run to the Start Line at Southsea Castle at 09.30hrs and head off West down the Solent.

All Teams in Race Start 2 will begin their run up to the start line and off West down the Solent at 10.00hrs.

The Fleet will return to Portsmouth on Monday 30th June and can be seen coming back over the line opposite Southsea Castle in Portsmouth from approximately 12.00 noon that day.
